Don’t worry, I won’t use my red pen (too much)…
Editing is one of those services I feel like all of us, at one point or another, need. After reading something for the 18th time, your eyes stop picking up where a comma needs to land. An extra pair of eyes to proof your work before it’s sent out to the masses lets you breathe a little easier.
Line Editing
Some of you reading this may not have realized there’s different forms of editing! It’s true - there are five types of editing. Line editing is used for the purpose of flow, style, and overall readability of the manuscript. Contrary to popular belief, line editing doesn’t include grammar, spelling, or punctuation errors.
Copy Editing
This type of editing gets into the guts of the sentences and is often more technical focused. Copy editing will take place after one round of edits but before proofreading. The purpose is to polish the copy through grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax to keep clear the author’s tone and original meaning.
Proofreading
The final step before publication - proofreading! This step is less labor intensive as line and copy edits but absolutely vital to make sure all errors have been ironed out. In this stage, there is no dramatic changes made but small corrections are added into the margins for last minute fixes.
